NZX trading hours

10am until 5pm Monday to Friday, except statutory holidays. Orders can be submitted anytime, and our broker can place orders into the market from 8:30am.

Pre-Open / Opening Auction

Before the market opens at 10am, the market begins it's pre-open session at 8:30am. In the pre-open, you can place, delete and amend orders, but your orders will not trade.

The opening auction occurs at a random time, 30 seconds either side of 10am, sophisticated algorithms discover the opening price by surveying the overlapping bids and asks in the market. During this matching phase, these algorithms are used to determine the highest volume of shares to be traded at a single price to find the opening price.

Pre-Close / Closing Auction

The closing auction works very similarly to the way that the opening auction does. This also occurs at a random 30 second window on either side of the market close (5pm)
