What and who are share registries?
Share registries manage you shares, including dividend payments and corporate actions.
In New Zealand, we have two main share registries, MUFG Pension & Market Services, and Computershare Investor Services. In Australia, there are five main registries as mentioned below. Each listed company uses a registry. To find out which registry your company uses, this can be found on either the NZX or ASX website. Although you'll transact through us, your shares will be held directly with these registries.
This is because we directly register shares in your ownership, rather than a through a custody model. This gives you more options regarding corporate actions, ability to go to shareholders meetings, dividend reinvestment plans, and transfers.
When you buy your first shares, your share registry will contact you via email or post and invite you to set up an account with them. You use your CSN + FIN and create an account for your New Zealand Shares, and your HIN for Australian shares. If you are unsure about whether you have an HIN, please refer to our Australian shares page.
When you set up your account with your registry, you can set your dividend advice and communication preferences.
As your shares are managed by the registry, they are also responsible your your dividend payments and advice. If you were trying to locate a dividend payment from your registry, you will need to contact them directly. Contact details for your registries can be found below.
If you're ever unsure of whether you should contact us or the registry, feel free to contact us and we can put you in the right direction.
Updating your address with your share registries
If you change your address, it is your responsibility to inform the share registries of your new address, as the share registry will only accept instructions from the registered shareholder. You should be aware that if there are discrepancies between your contact details and the address held by the share registries, we may be unable to accept orders and there may be delays in settling trades and/or paying funds to your bank account.
Note: Australian CHESS customers are not required to notify Australian share registries of any new contact details - Invest Direct will do this on your behalf.
