How do I add existing holdings to my portfolio?

Many of our customers join us with existing shares, which is great!

If you’ve purchased shares or bonds elsewhere, adding them to your Invest Direct portfolio is easy. Just click 'Movements', select 'New Movement', and enter the relevant details

​Instrument: search for the share, bond or fund you would like to add to the portfolio
​Date: enter the date they were initially purchased, or today's date
​Quantity: enter the quantity
​Market price/share: enter the cost per share, or the current price
​Brokerage/Other charges/Trade fee: enter if applicable or leave these blank
​Click 'Submit'

If you have existing shares in NZ, they will usually be held a CSN (starting with 33 and is 9 digits long). If you have an existing CSN, this will be applied to your account straight away and you can transact you shares immediately.

Some existing shares in NZ may be held on a Holder Number (usually starts with R or N, and will be between 8-10 digits). If you have a Holder Number, you can provide us with the Holder Number and the FIN and we can sell it for you or apply it to the CSN we've created for you. A Holder Number usually starts with R or N, and will be between 8-10 digits.

If you have existing shares in Australia, we can sell these instantly provided they're held on an 'SRN'. An SRN is 9-11 characters starting with 'I'. Simply put through a sell order and click on the words "I have an SRN".

Existing shares overseas (in the US/UK) will need to be transferred into our custody from your existing broker or from the transfer agent if they're directly registered. If this is you, just email us at [email protected] and we can assist with the process.
